What is an Infant Car Seat?

An Infant Car Seat is exactly as its name proposes, a car seat for infants. These car seats are specifically meant for the earlier months of your child’s life. The period of time your little one will need to be rear-facing in a vehicle. They will be able to use this car seat from birth until they reach the car seat manufacturer limits for height and weight.

Infant Car Seats are known for making transport and travel easy with an infant. These car seats do not require you to remove your child from the car seat when you have reached your destination. You can simply detach the car seat from the car base. Most will have an available stroller base to snap into or if you would like to you can just as easily carry the car seat.

There are a few different styles and systems of infant car seats that are available on the market. There are individual Infant Car Seats with a Car Seat Base. A Travel system where an Infant Car Seat pairs with a stroller, these systems typically come with an Infant Car Seat, the Stroller Frame and a Car Seat Base. Then there is the Car-Seat Stroller which is an all-in-one Car Seat/Stroller combo. A great example of a Car-Seat Stroller is the Doona. (link).

Below are a few Pros and Cons on Infant Car Seats.

Pro:

  • Do not have to unbuckle your baby when getting in and out of the car.
    • Added bonus is that the baby will not have to be disturbed while sleeping.
  • Easily click the car seat in and out of its car base and into the stroller frame.
  • Will only require purchasing an extra Car Seat Base for another vehicle instead of another car seat set up.

Con:

  • Not as much longevity as a Convertible Car Seat and will have to purchase another car seat when your baby outgrows the Infant Car Seat or reaches the manufacturer limits.

What is a Convertible Car Seat?

Convertible Car Seats are also widely known as an “all-in-one car seat”. These types of car seats are best known for their longevity. Your child will be able to use this car seat from birth until they can safely use the adult seat belt in the vehicle. Convertible Car Seats can change and grow with each car seat milestone your child reaches – Rear-Facing, Forward-Facing and a Booster Seat. This also makes Convertible Car Seats a more cost-effective option due to not needing to purchase a new car seat as your child grows.

It is highly recommended to have your child stay in each phase of their car seat for as long as safely possible. With each transition there is a degree of protection taken away. Even if your child has outgrown an Infant Car Seat it does not always mean they are ready to be in the Forward-Facing car seat position. The Convertible Car Seat allows for a longer life in a Rear-Facing position due to size and higher weight limits.

However, unlike Infant Car Seats these car seats do not provide the convenience of not having to remove your child from their car seat once you have reached your destination. Therefore, it is not as portable and does not allow for the car seat to transfer and latch into a stroller base.

Below are a few Pros and Cons on Convertible Car Seats.

Pro:

  • Longevity – Can use the same car seat in all stages: rear-facing, forward-facing, booster seat, and till they transition into the adult seat belt.
  • Budget friendly in the long run.
  • Transitions from Rear-Facing to Forward-Facing easily.
  • (Weight limit is which higher allows for Rear-Facing longer)

Con:

  • Some hospitals may require an infant car seat for your baby to leave the hospital in.
  • Not able to latch into a stroller base.
  • Child has to be moved into or out of the car seat with each destination.
  • If need multiple Car Seats will have to purchase a whole other Convertible Car Seat set up.

When do I need to switch from an Infant Car Seat to a Convertible Car Seat?

It is time to switch out of an Infant Car Seat when your child has reached the maximum weight or height limit according to the Manufacturer Limits on your car seat. The ranges for this depend on your specific car seat but are typically around:

  • Weight: 30 – 35 Pounds
  • Height: 30 – 32 Inches

Or if your child’s head sits 1 inch or less below the top of the car seat.

For many infants outgrowing the Infant Car Seat can be anywhere between 9 months to 2 years old depending on your child’s personal growth. Typically a child’s height will be more of a factor when needing to transition compared to weight. Therefore, if they are still under the weight limit but have reached the height limit or 1 inch below the top of the car seat they will need to transition.

Most infants tend to outgrow their infant car seat before they are ready to transition to a forward-facing car seat. Therefore, parents will transition to a Convertible Car Seat. Convertible Car Seats are larger and have a higher weight limit to accommodate your infant’s growth and ensure that they are riding more comfortably and safely. When you transition to a Convertible Car Seat make sure to always check the Car Seat Laws in your state and the manufacturer limits of your convertible car seat to know if your child is still required to be rear-facing. It is safer to keep a child rear facing as long as possible.

Car Seat Laws can differ per state, the website SafeRide4Kids is a great source to read the current Car Seat Laws in your residing state.
